Guidebook with maps/step-by-step
Start: Foyer de Fond car park 1/ Take advantage of the long but pleasant walk along the pastoral track (2 km) to admire the variety of cows in the pastures and the beautiful peaks of the Chartreuse Nord massif. Leave the track on your right and continue straight ahead on the track as far as the ‘La Serra’ signpost at 1315m. 2/ At the post, turn left onto the track that climbs into the forest for around 300m, then follow a path that rises up into the cliffs. The path is not always clear on this steep, unstable slope and it is essential to follow the often widely-spaced markings (‘yellow line’ and old green and red markings) to avoid finding yourself on an impassable rocky bar. After passing the sheep fence, the path becomes gentler. Arriving at the Cabane d'Outheran (1596m - signs), which the route skirts to the left, the well-marked path (yellow line markers) winds through this vast karstic plateau with its characteristic relief (lapiaz, scialets, dolines, etc.) and almost entirely wooded except for a few rare clearings. 3/ Once you reach the small grassy plateau, you can take a picnic break near the cross marking the summit of Mont Outheran (1673m), which offers a fine view of most of the peaks in the Chartreuse massif (Mont Granier, Pinet, Dent de Crolles, Lances de Mallissard, Grand et Petit Som, Grande Sure, etc.) as well as the Belledonne, Aravis and Mont Blanc ranges. The return journey takes the same route, although care should be taken on the descent after the sheep barrier.
